Just saw the news item on this. People deliberately stand in the jet blast like it's all good fun, with little appreciation of the sheer power of commercial jet engines.

I was thinking of setting up a walk in emergency eye clinic right next to the beach too! Those warning signs are there for a reason. Would St. Maarten put permanent weatherproof cushioning on those cement blocks? It might behoove them this relatively inexpensive cost of, to support the tourist dollars this unique attraction has proven to be a boon to them. St. Maarten promotes this attraction albeit not directly.

I don't think so. This unique attraction drives too much tourist $. It might behoove them to attach some weatherproof cushioning to the cement blocks to at least partially mitigate any future injuries. I'm sure others have perished at various times/ways in the past as well.

... maybe they should make everyone watch "Pushing Tin" before hitting the beach??

.....why do people touch a bench with a sign that says "wet paint"? there is a big danger sign on the fence and yet hundreds of people a year hang out there to be blown away for fun..........

An unfortunate accident and such a waste of a young life!.....RIP!

From videos I've watched that were taken at Maho Beach, I'm surprised this hasn't happened more often. Its a sad loss of life, and could have been prevented.
Those jet engines put out a powerful blast, and its nothing to be trifled with.
