VIPs toured Qatar’s newest aviation hub on Sunday (February 17) ahead of its opening in April.

Doha’s Hamad International Airport, part of the Gulf State’s efforts to modernize its capital ahead of the 2022 World Cup, is billed as a world-class facility which will redefine passenger and transit experience.

The slick new airport will become the future home of the national carrier, Qatar Airways, and is set to receive passenger flights of a dozen or more airlines as early as April this year. Cargo operations are planned to open by March.

The airport opened about one year ago. It certainly improved transit in Qatar and has many facilities, expensive duty free outlets, and a range of restaurants and food franchises. The north end of the terminal is still under construction and there are still many remote stands requiring bus transit and climbing stairs onto the aircraft. The airport feels a bit "broody" and dark though this may be to limit the energy expended on air conditioning.

There are still occasional flight and departure delays due to congestion but some of this is due to airspace restrictions rather than airport capacity. Transit times and reliability is much better than Dubai (currently). A major improvement for Qatar and it will be interesting to watch how it evolves in the race with UAE airlines and airports.

Kinda off topic, but won't the 2022 World Cup players have many heat exhaustion problems in that regional climate?

Good question and they certainly would IF they were holding the World Cup in the summer. Somehow they have managed to convince the World Cup executive to allow the games to be moved to late the year. Now sure how this was managed as it will disrupt no end of professional games AND makes for major conflicts in the broadcasting schedules for all the participating media companies. Many other issues cropping up (the sever liquor restrictions, affordable accommodation, etc).

Back on thread. At least the airport should be able to handle the increased traffic.

Wet in places they did not intend:

Rain on Wednesday deluged Doha’s Hamad international airport, the home of Qatar Airways. Social media users reported leaks at the facility, which opened last year and is estimated to have cost $17bn (£11.2bn). The airport said flights operated normally throughout the day.

A good test of all weather capabilities. Dense fog for a few days put only a small dent in operations. Ground and air facilities worked well during very low visibility operations.

This airport is already experiencing capacity issues. Many flights are forced to off terminal gates and using stairs and bus transportation. Secondary security for USA flights is backed up (who designed that area??).

Etihad is experiencing pre-clearance issues with space design and connection time problems in Abu Dhabi.

Hammad International Airport (Doha) is out of space! Gate restrictions were in place and many aircraft parked at remote stands with passengers being bussed to the terminal (just like the OLD airport). There is furious activity to open more stands at the terminal but there is not prediction of when they will become available. Once in the terminal, passengers are faced with long lineups through immigration. An official has stated that the new airport is already "over capacity".
