.....so for 22 years the FBI is still looking for this guy who threw a bunch of oxygen canisters in a box not secured properly?? What is the rush. He'll be dead in another 10 years and they can close the case.

    Really!........22years later......!o_O

... I'm sure the "Fake" Investigation Bureau spends more time looking for "collusion" then for "real" criminals. DB Cooper must be staying at the same place Elvis is??

Unfortunately time has effected any real ability to come to the "real" cause of this crash. Oxygen canisters was the big theory. However I do remember that there were electrical problems with this aircraft and there were also issues, that could also have caused a fire aboard. The aircraft hit the Everglades at 500 MPH and trying the retrieve any evidence was impossible. 22 years went by and they are still looking for this so called bad guy that caused the crash (maybe?)

...very true. Often, theories are just SWAGs that seem plausible. The "experts" SWAG all the time, especially when it fits their cause. Who would have thought a piece of foam would bring down a space shuttle or a wing falling off a cherokee arrow??

Back in 1996, the Value-Jet crashed caused a shake up in the FAA. The Assoiciate Administrator for Safety stepped down. Value-jet was operating with a used jet fleet that they bought from other airlines. There were maintnenance problems and the DC-9 aircraft was having some electrical problems that were supposedly under investigation.

Yes all those people died and someone in the FAA had to pay for it. Broderick was that someone. I believe the real cause for the value-jet Fire is unknown. But who cares now. The people that were involved have long retired or died.

... regardless of what happened to the people who are responsible for this crash, they still have to pass the ultimate final judgement. There is a special place in hell for them. The victims families still deserve those who are responsible be held accountable.

The issues, which affected MD-80's as well, had to do with the relays for high voltage located behind the captain's seat. They did not have Kapton insulation like the MD-11. The DC-9 did not need electricity or hydraulic power to fly. If there was a fire on the flight deck, there likely would have been a transmission from the crew stating such. The CVR was recovered and a lot of conversation was transcribed.

While we agree that there was scant evidence beyond the CVR and NOTOC for the O2 generators, and having spent some time around South Florida's aviation scene, I find the official theory to be credible. There was one more thing that was found at the crash site- steel control cables that had been melted. They didn't burn after hitting the water. Nothing on the plane except kerosene could burn hot enough to melt steel cables... unless pure oxygen was involved.

Hmmmm.....well too much time has gone by EG, I can't remember clear enough why I believe it was poor maintnenance that brought down the aircraft. The Probable causes over the years on high profile air crashes leave a lot to think about The Aibus tail failure on AA 587 back in 2001 is one! It was so close to 9/11, it scared the hell out of us!....but they blamed the co-pilot for breaking off the tail.......?
    https://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/27/news/copilot-error-blamed-in-2001-airbus-crash.html

BTW here is an interesting really long thesis on three high profile air crashes. Again a lot to think about and actually on a few of them only God really knows what happened!

BTW Russ there is a real interesting story on how Jet-Blue was certified and who made big bucks on Airbus aircraft sales. Boeing lost out as Jet-Blue went with the new European design. I had quite a few long talks with Gabe on the certification process!!!

To bad those over seas bank accounts can not be made public;)

My impression was that the O2 containers was a pretty solid "Probable Cause". I didn't know that any other theories might have been out there but considering the age of the aircraft involved 27 years old I believe, faulty wiring could come under suspicion. Twenty-two years is a long time and I think the FBI had a lot on it's plate to make this a priority investigation. Richard's right he will be probably be dead in 10 years if he isn't already as peoples lives sometimes goes. One thing is don't get me started on AA 587. When I was a kid and my father who found out my love of aviation, an engineer himself explained why airplanes are "over engineered". Keeping that in mind things like AA 587 should have never happened no matter how aggressive the rudder was being moved. Did Airbus ever share any responsibility in that one, I don't remember. But those people should still be alive IMHO.
