ATLANTA (AP) — The CEO of Delta Air Lines says the company will seek compensation for its losses after a power outage knocked out the Atlanta airport's power supply and also its backup electricity for about 11 hours Sunday.

The blackout stranded thousands of passengers and led to the cancellation of more than 1,500 flights just ahead of the frenzied holiday travel period.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he found it "shocking" that it took so long to get power restored. Bastian said he doesn't know whether Georgia Power or Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was responsible, but said Delta will have conversations with both.

Bastian told the newspaper the airline may have lost $25 million to $50 million of revenue as a result of the blackout.

LL: Might this be a case of FAA airport infrastructure neglect despite budget increases?

Delta is/has a pretty good business model and their past/present investments is partly why they're making money, eg: Buying their own jet fuel refinery, Their sticktoitiveness on the C-Series, etc. They also don't take sh!t from well known Airplane makers so why would they take any from a poorly maintained airport facility that is only as good as their weakest part. It's their largest hub so they have that right imo.

Maybe, someone can go into the "just in case the power goes out at the airport" insurance business and charge a hefty premium. I have no sympathy for the business' that are highly depended on utilities companies. Maybe, they should diversify their hub system? It's like putting all your eggs in one basket.

I just hope some didn't take note on how to do the next "hit" on aviation.

From what I understand, the outage was from a fire because of a minor maintenance issue that was neglected.

It seems there is a major outage every once and a while at an airport and then time goes by and everyone forgets......

I wonder how many backup generators are needed to bring a "Hub" online? This power outage shows how dependant we've become on electricity. Doors, escalators and moving walkways not working, how will we survive?

I wonder if it was just the ATC that was effected, would Delta ask the FAA to reimburse them?

I just hope our infrastructure is secured from the "bad people" attacks!

    "Build the wall"!

Ewe ouch! Nope, I was injured and disabled because of his policies! They can spend all the money in the world on NextGen, but that won't help if the ground infrastructure isn't working. If you can't keep what you have running, what makes you think you can run a new single source system.

We wouldn't certify aircraft with a single points of failure on critical systems. Why are airports? How could the "feds" have allowed it? Maybe, it's because we have people in charge that has no aviation experience? It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Can you say, Karma, Mr. Foxx?

Wasn't there another power outage at a major airport earlier this year?

There's been several computer glitches this year. Even a few weather related closures too. Delta had both computer and weather impacts that cost 125 and 150 million each, so 50 million is nothing compared to computer and weather issues. Delta is just mad that it happened at their home hub.

Maybe, the "biggly one" can fix the issue since Obama did nothing for the infrastructure. "Shovel ready jobs" my eye!

....Besides, FAA is not keeping the current system operating. They wait till there is a failure and then it is repaired with band aids.

Billions are being spent on Next/Gen and the New Administrator will have to try and fix the old system because the new system is not functioning .........Yet (if ever)

A failure in NY grounds thousands of flights?!
