Lets hope that there are not enough with the same attitude as Daley left to prevent this happening.

Daley was a fool. Closing a perfectly good airport in a perfect location to support the city!

This appears to be "Fake News" There is no politician smart enough to know that Meig's was truly a reliever airport. When the field closed it put a burden on the two other airports. It effected business in the downtown area. Many companies that went to conventions at McCormick in Chicago would land their business aircraft there. THe closure caused a major loss of business in the downtown area!

Closing Meig's was an example of a corrupt city government controlled by one man! He will burn in hell for sure

Today the Meig's field site is a wasteland with nothing being done with land worth millions of dollars!

That's for dam sure. The area is a disaster. Nothing going on and a waste of an asset. They wasted millions to destroy this airport that caused absolutely no problem for anyone. It was a blatant act by evil people!

My journalism class I took in college is making me itch to verify this story. I can remember in the late 60's and 70's Chicago Helicopter Airways and Ozark using having limited operations out of Meigs. And at that time MDW didn't even have airline traffic after the opening of ORD, now its a hub for Southwest. The closure of Meigs from what I understand Meigs was its interference with the congested airspace surrounding MDW and ORD Can't see Chicago dumping hundreds of millions of dollars to reopen Meigs for GA. only. It never was a true reliever airport to begin with. Unless Emmanuel wants to encourage the use of GA into the downtown Chicago area for economic growth. I don't know if he is smart enough though.

I attended many shows at Chicago's McCormick Place which is right next to Meigs. Many of my customers flew in with their personnel and corporate aircraft. It was convient and saved them time compared to landing at ORD. The distruction of Meigs was a political statement by a corrupt politician. Ironically the land is going to waste with nothing being done to put it back on the tax rolls. To this day I did not know why Daley did this and for what gain other then destroying a public asset?

Hi LL. I was just about to refer to that article which appeared in FlightAware Weekly. No mention of Rahm Emanual there. I'm afraid that the proposal to reopen Meigs may only be an attempt to gain votes, and should Mr. Wilson get elected he will probably find that Daley still pulls strings in Chicago and there will be too much opposition to move forward. I hope I'm wrong.

Hmmmm I thought the airport generated money......but it is estimated that the airport generated between 300-500 million agrarian in revenues. It was a convient airport. It bothered no on as it's traffic patterns were over the lake. Very little noise. So a fool like Daley destroyed this valuable asset because he felt like it!

The FAA fined Chicago for using airport revenues to actually destroy the runway and without notice.

    Sad!

I learned a lot more about Miegs Field with this article. Knew about the airline service I in the 70's I knew about Chicago Helicopter Airways and I pretty sure that Ozark did the runs to Springfield. Didn't know about the others though. Didn't know it was the second busiest business district airport either. What was Daly's motive, and to bulldoze the runways without notification to the FAA and in the dark of night. Why bulldoze of them at all? Sounds like some more good old Chicago city corruption al la Richard Daly I who ran Chicago like his own Kingdom. The reopening if this guy does get to be Mayor the airport would be a great asset to the Chicago business community as well if commercial flights are allowed not as a reliever airport but a destination in its own right like London's City Airport especially with no interference to MDW or ORD. I wish him luck but the Chicago political machine is a huge complicated system that tends to chew people up and spit them out.
