In 1995, the US pressured the Bahamas to disclose personal financial data from their banks. Within 18 months, over 500 banks pulled out. That left tourism as the main source of employment. With cheaper air travel, other destinations have become competitive for their share of the tourism market. The result is a lot of young men without an appreciable outlook for their bleak futures. The crime has sky-rocketed but is confined to high-density Nassau. Over 100 murders in 2017 in Nassau, mostly gang-related and drug-money fueled, but none were tourists. The out-islands like Abaco and Grand Bahama have remained calm but the US travel advisories never specify that the crime problem is on only 1 of the 700 islands, and never mentions that several large cruise ships dock in Nassau every day.... These travel advisories are more of an arm-twisting maneuver by US politicians than any real warning, and that's in response to many things including the Chinese influence.

Anyways, most all of the people wanting to leave the storm ravaged islands have been moved. The medical teams are wrapping up their triage centers. The clean-up of debris and collection of dead bodies is ramping up. Most of the airports are receiving airplanes, although Scotland Cay's runway is significantly shorter than it was. Same as neighboring US, the people are mostly good, but the government not so much....

The President is concerned that many in the Bahamas are not there legally and he does not want them in the US.....

Unfortunately, US Immigration is denying entry to Bahamians with valid passports, visas, and round-trip tickets.
    Not nice....
Most Bahamians have some family in the US and want to go over for a couple of weeks. The electricity in Nassau is till not reliable due to flood water.

Any info on casualties ? I can not believe only 50 people lost their lives. It appears that the government in the Bahamas is play down the deaths!

The government is only counting dead bodies. They are not counting the missing. Most of the missing were likely swept out to sea. There weren't solid numbers to start with, so we'll never know an exact amount.

Thanks. Still waiting to hear from a friend on Treasure Cay, but all my Freeport buds have checked in.

Despite the difficulties at present, the civil servants' union called a national strike because they haven't been paid in a month.

Yeah, and those had melted a bit as I was doin a walk around lookin for damage. Dents in my car and a star in my windshield. One even poked a hole through a heavy enough plastic lawn chair.

Wow those are some hailstones. Hail damage on a car is a PIA but hopefully it won't be hard to fix. When I worked for Larry H Miller Dodge/Jeep/Chrysler/Ram etc etc in Tucson he would buy all the hail damaged cars from dealers in the Southeast U.S. and have a special lot where we would take people looking for new cheap cars. Much to my dismay they sold like hotcakes. A lot of hail damaged cars driving around Tucson that rarely gets hail. This guy knew how to make money like the "Desert Package" which consisted of tinted windows that would be illegal in any other state and nitrogen filled tires. $3000. Nice thing was I made commission off of it, but my felt guilty jacking up peoples payments for this option when they could barely afford to pay for the car itself. I would never make a good Finance Manager.

Yup. I hated the F&I dept and them selling their souls to the devil. Parasites. The dealer I worked at kept a paintless dent removal guy busy for about 2 months after a huge hailstorm and he was very very good. No traces at all from his work. He had all the tools and could access any part of a vehicle, otherwise a dealer legally has to disclose any damage of $600.00 or more upon sale of a 'new' vehicle.
