Freeport is the second main airport, after Nassau. It's been under water before. It will be back in service again before it's dried out.
Marsh Harbour airport on the first island hit was also under water. Here are some pics that I received from FB friends. One is residential Freeport and the other is the oil storage near the Freeport airport. Massive environmental disaster.... The pics from Marsh Harbour are worse- there's nothing left standing, looks like Kendall, Florida, after Hurricane Andrew in 1992. First reports by the Coast Guard were many injuries, and too many dead to count, but since then, the deaths are not as bad as was feared. However, I am still waiting to hear about many of my friends.

The GA community in South Florida was engaged in relief work before the winds abated. There are dozens of aircraft operators collecting and flying supplies. Truly amazing community when we aren't fighting amongst ourselves...

I saw the first news videos from the air shortly after. Very few places left standing or recognizable as dwellings. At the request of the Bahamian govt, the USCG and the National Guard are over there by the 1,000s assisting already. I also heard that the UN is there. This concerns me as they gerrymander at every opportunity. Thank God the Clintons' aren't there or are they via the UN?. I wonder How the 'secret' Chinese deepwater sub base near Cooperstown and the Danish Maersk shipping center faired.

No submarines at this time, but both major political parties have sold out the country to the Chinese and Obama did nothing. As this hurricane was hitting Abaco, when the public's attention was turned away, the MP's signed an agreement to sell most of fisheries products to China. I'm not privy to the agreement, but I will bet it's not in the fishermens' favor. Chinese long-liners tried to enter the fisheries 20 years ago but were rebuffed. Now they just do what they want. This port will be for exporting the fisheries catch back to China among other things. Most people figured the Parliament learned about the Chinese after the massive debacle of a resort called Bah Mar, but the MPs' greed has no bounds. The UN is not in the Bahamas to my knowledge. For better or worse, the 2 biggest squatter settlements of illegal Haitians were on Abaco, were....

The damage is incredible. I used to live in Oklahoma City so I've seen tornado damage. This looks more like tornado damage than Hurricane damage. Tornado damage all the structures flattened cars inside buildings and tossed around like Matchbox toys. Then again 36 hours of 180+ winds I guess this is the result. There is no official death toll, with this devastation it's going to be in the thousands.

......It is estimated that 20,000 people were living in this area before the storm hit. There is no number on how many evacuated.......

Many couldn't evac because they don't have money. On top of Customs duty, the government raised the Value Added Tax (VAT) to 12% last year, and electricity is up to 44cents/kWHr. The aren't many jobs in Freeport either. The F'ing governement in Nassau wants all donations to go through them but after quick public outrage, they are allowing several GA planes through the new restricted area directly from S. Florida to Abaco and Grand Bahama. My friends are landing in Freeport and Treasure Cay. Marsh Harbour was reported to have armed gangs robbing people, so no one has landed there as yet. The death toll will be in the hundreds. Starting to stink of rotting flesh already.

Edit- No Chinese aid. They own the government. Don't care about the people...

A cruise ship evacuated 1,000 to Nassau. Most were evacuated to the ocean involuntarily I'm afraid. :(

Which gets their own stuff through and it was a special request for the post hurricane people of the Bahamas.
In the last year, I've seen three travel advisories to the Bahamas because of crime. This comes after the Chinese bought out their govt.
