The Captain had a type-rating for B-17. For the type-rating, and annual proficiency, one must demonstrate a landing with both engines on one wing inoperative. At the estimated weight of the accident plane, it should have flown easily with 1 engine out. There's more to this than a simple engine failure. Without CVR or FDR, investigators will look for PED's with video of the flight for clues. A very sad day for the warbird community.

From a friend, the 9-0-9 was having many problems with wet magnetos. The radio call to blow out the engine may have been about their practice of removing the water from inside the mags with compressed air.
