An Air Canada A320 on final approach to San Francisco came within an estimated 11 seconds of plowing into a taxiway filled with loaded and fully-fueled airliners last Friday. The pilot inexplicably lined up with the taxiway rather than the runway that he was cleared to land on, and the aircraft was 175 feet above the ground when ATC gave him the go-around. There were approximately 1,000 passengers aboard Air Canada flight 759 and the four aircraft on the taxiway. In the attached audio file, one pilot on the taxiway is heard to say "Air Canada went right over us."

If the runway was closed with a big 'X' lit up at the landing end, Why did ATC clear the A/C A-320 to land on it? If A/C has in place a system to notify pilots of NOTAMS, why was this NOTAM not relayed and ATC questioned by the PIC? Seems to be a lot of blame to go around(no pun intended) here?

...SMS and compliance philosophy will get to the bottom of this. 11 seconds is longer then they ride bulls. Warning letters and letters of correction all around!! We still have the safest NAS in the world!! Just ask the adminstator. As you can see, you don't need to be a pilot to run the agency!!

PS: Sorry, my sarcasm button is stuck. Must be the meds.

...wonder if the agency will start a new data collection of "taxiway incursions". Between Han Solo and this one, it's a matter of time until the "big one" happens!! Drain the Swamp!!!

I can't imagine them never noticing that they were lined up with multiple aircraft facing the opposite direction rather than an open runway.

......the FAA has enjoyed pure "LUCK" where near mid air collisions, ATC errors, pilot deviations have been averted.

The FAA has changed the rules to help avoid any future screw ups. Has to be a instrument approach at night minimum there now while repairs to the closed runway are going on. No more visuals. Having the lights off was not wise.

...I wonder if NextGen and ADS-B would have solved this? Another project that is behind schedule and over budget. I can't wait to find out who the "great pilot" the "biggly one" has in mind to fix all the past screw ups.

Hiring "Mickey Mouse" would be a step up from Huerta.....
